Opened in 2004 and landing number one with the most enrollments for every start date, our three-level Ann Arbor Institute is centrally located in the city inside Nicholas Arcade and close to all major transportation. It also sits uniquely among many boutiques and salons.
Many of our Educators and Staff are graduates of Douglas J Aveda Institutes, having trained rigorously — from history in anatomy and physiology of body mechanics to perfecting Aveda color and working in multiple product lines to makeup and skincare certifications.
What is your most memorable moment at Douglas J?
Getting my pin for being with the company for five years. When I first started, I always looked up to people who had their pin and felt like they worked for Douglas J forever and were so much wiser — and then I became one of those people!
I feel that I have learned so much from attending Douglas J and that I can take my techniques and experiences I had there to my current job.
What is your most memorable moment?
When I was an apprentice at the Okemos salon, TJ Weaver, the founder’s son, asked me what I wanted to do with my career. I said I wanted to run the salon and I needed him to tell me how to get there. His answer was, work hard, put myself in a position to be noticed and take every opportunity that comes across my path, no matter how intimidating.
Every day on the clinic floor it felt like you were working in a real salon because of how fast paced it was. I think that prepared me well for time management.
Choosing to train with Douglas J is not just attending cosmetology school, it's the first step in building a career.
